Discuss the songs, cover art, inside booklet, etc of Suede's second album, "Dog Man Star".

You know, at first I was actually kind of afraid to listen to this album--what w/ all of the drama 'n' all *cough*--and I was told by my brother, (whose fault it is that I BECAME a Suede fan), that it was 'different'. Uh...different isn't the word? Furghin' EPIC is more like it. I was kinda surprised at the difference between it and the first album and I didn't know what to think of it...again, at first. I are in love w/ it now! Despite all that went on, the songs themselves are just gorgeous. I actually play DMS more than I play Coming Up (my previous, pre-Bernie-lovage fav from way back.) I could go on and on about what I like and/or love about each song, but...that will have to do for another time. I will say this, though. If you happen to catch me walking back & forth to class, it's likely that DMS will be blaring through my headphones.

Aww this album definitely has the most songs I've liked from Suede (although I've yet to hear Sci-Fi Lullabies, which I've seen raves about). The vocals are generally better and more layered than on the debut imo, and if there's one Suede song I adore it's "The 2 of Us".
A few of the songs become just a bit too melodramatic and overblown (yes, even for Suede... I think "Still Life" was one that was promising but peaked to a sort of ridiculous degree), but generally quite interesting stuff.

I agree with you about the melodramatic-overblownness of some songs. I personally prefer the acoustic version of Still Life that I have seen floating about on youtube. (Just Brett & Bernie = nice.) But then again, I sometimes like really pretentious orchestration, layers of strings and horns & all that, so a part of me tolerates all of the pomp that gets tossed about on this album.

I ADORE this album. This Hollywood Life, Black or Blue and Still Life; amazing. All the drama involved, and the melodramatic songs... I love it.
