The Verve were an English rock band formed in 1990 in Wigan. Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to shoegazing and space rock, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums. Sources: Last.fm, Wikipedia.

They had done quite a bit of work in the early to mid 90s. They were lauded on evening radio shows without breaking through to mainstream attention, for which they were likely a bit bland. As 'Britpop' peaked, it was announced that they were "splitting". It was a bad move for a band of their potential to split at this time. The world didn't mourn them and 'Britpop' steamed on unabashed. Maybe it was this that kicked them up their backsides. And so, well over a year later came 'Urban Hyms' which was praised as a great album. There is no doubt that those singles on it were good but was the album good as a whole? And where do you go after the finesse of those singles? Alongside them were the left-wing comedic anarchy (or anarchic comedy?) of Chumbawumba and the cacophany of reverberating noise that was Oasis 'Be Here Now'. It was collectively the death knell of 'Britpop' and all those who had remained "inbetweener" like Sleeper, Echobelly, Cast, Ocean Colour Scene, Mansun, Reef and The Bluetones went with it....
