Yay, I was totally going to make a thread on them! I love these guys. It was a delayed reaction though, having heard some songs from their first album Strange House when it came out and not really digging it at all. It wasn't until they'd covered Suicide's "Shadazz" (from Blast First Betite's EP tribute series to Suicide, one of my favorite bands ever) that I took notice last year, and then Primary Colours shows up and I totally loved it!!! I got more used to their first album after hearing their second. I like how open they are about their influences (far more than the frequent accusation that "they sound like Joy Division" - ORLY, is that the only post-punk band anyone knows?! ): rateyourmusic.com/list/MarilynRoxie/the_horrors___influences_and_favorites...And of course that Nicky is a fan. ;D Primary Colours is still streamable for freefrom the NME site, if anyone wants to listen that hasn't yet: www.nme.com/news/the-horrors/44240

I only just got into these guys due to one of my best friends always going on about them...
The debut album is superb, the second album...eh, I like that they were trying to evolve, but 3 good songs overall don't make a great album.
I love Strange House, reminds me of The Damned, Eighties Matchbox, The Cramps...yeah, I love sleaze punk, what of it!

I know someone who is WAY into these cats, and I just can't seem to bring myself to listen to them. I am curious, though, because some of what I have heard isn't that bad. Could any of you suggest any songs I should look up?

Count in Fives, Sea Within A Sea and Draw Japan are my favourite songs by 'em.
I prefer their dirtier goth punk albeit so I have dodgy taste.

Well, that's cool. If I wind up interested, I can always delve deeper.

Well, that's cool. If I wind up interested, I can always delve deeper. As always both their albums are available for download on my livejournal too if you do get interested/can't find physical copies for a decent price.

...I'm beginning to think you may be Santie Clause. Haha. I was going to snoop around before I actually downloaded anything. (I'm sure I could find a raggedy last.fm page about them...or something.) If I like, I may go ahead and grab those. EDIT: I've listened to a few, and I have to say that these cats aren't bad, not at all. I like the slightly paranoid and manic energy they have. I can see why my friend digs them.

@dean: 3 good songs overall?!?! The whole album is ridiculously brilliant. My favorite track on the new one though is "New Ice Age", which oddly enough is sort of reminiscent of their first album. It's hard to say what I would think of Primary Colours if it wasn't for the fact that I was already obsessed with most things considered krautrock and post-punk! Their first album was more accessible-sounding to me only after hearing the second. I don't think they're anywhere near their full-development as a band though, I'm quite interested to hear what they come up with next! subrosa: Yes, slightly paranoid and manic-sounding are good descriptors, haha! I want to see them in concert so badly, gah!!!

Yeah I think that's what gets me about the album overall, it feels like a stepping stone album to me, but the repetitive trance moments bore me as...well, I'm into Aphex Twin and Brian Eno esque ambience so it just seems fairly dull to me, which it shouldn't, but it lacks the tones in the back of the songs to make me care a lot really.
I'm interested in their third album really as that'll be a better barometer for me, I'd love to see if they refine their current sound a bit and reign it in, keep the style and sound but just be more careful with it I guess.

Though, I'd be wary of the kids who'd want to mosh and thrash about. (I know there's at least SOME fool who would try that to these cats. I can't stand that.) But I know I'd leave wanting to barf, but from dancing...

With the later album it's more resembling a shoegaze crowd, but given the hectic gothabilly punk stylings of the debut you have to expect some moshing really.

Oh yeah, moshing is DEFINITELY to be expected w/ these cats, that's just not my thing, personally. I don't like the idea of bashing about into someone's face instead of listening and jigging to a tune. It seems a little pointless to me. Why pay attention to that when you have musics in front of you??

I so wanted to dislike these guys (I don't really know why, hype I suppose), but 'Strange House' is fantastic. Particularly fond of 'Count in Fives' and 'Gloves.'
Given how impressed I was by their debut, I did find the follow-up disappointing on first listen, but it's definitely grown on me over time.

I too was sceptical of them at first. BUT THEN I listened to their first album and I loved it. I loved the second one too. I've seen them live twice. They're really good. But they play rather short sets. Short sets that are AWESOME (and brilliantly executed bringing with them a fragrance of flowers yadda yadda blah)
