Yeah, hearing about that was awful! :/ He's supposedly okay now, but it still hasn't been explained why he collapsed in the first place. He's still quite young Meat is Murder is fab!! Well I Wonder is one of my very favorite Smiths songs ever =)

Eeep. That's not cool. I'm a little embarrassed to say it, but I own very little Smiths records. I heart them, yes...I'm not that stupid. They're just one of those bands that I think needs to be listened to thoroughly, I just can't seem to get a proper start! (I always feel like a charlatan when I talk about The Smiths because of that... )

I am controversial on these guys, I think their production ruins them, along with many of the lyrics not being so profound once you try to look at them.
Then again I haven't been a fan of anything Morrisey has done barring his debut solo album, which is epic win. Last Night, Maudlin Street > all Smith's songs combined.

^ Hahaha that's a refreshing perspective. I do enjoy The Smiths but I can see where the detractors are coming from. I haven't really delved into any of Moz's solo work yet but the debut sounds intriguing! subrosa: Aww you're not a charlatan for that - some things just take a while to get into, it's quite common. =)

I like them well enough (to put a Smiths pin on my coat lapel) I just have listened to, maybe, a quarter of their catalogue of songs? I couldn't tell you what song I've heard from what album...

Meat is Murder is my favorite as well, Johnny's guitar work is absolutely beautiful <3 AND MORRISSEY'S LYRICS! I can't seem to get that much into Morrissey's solo stuff though, idk, the back up band is just horrendous.

Favourite Smiths song would have to be This Charming Man - as Nel put it "The song sounds like a flower dancing" :'D

Good points subrosa & deansodisco.
The cliched 80s production which was too clean and without what I call "proper" drums was the ruination of music generally in that era. But that was how it was. And what made 'Britpop' such a refreshing change when it did break through from its indie beginnings.
When you listen to the first two Happy Mondays albums ('Squirrel & The G Man' & 'Bummed') you hear that typical production but infused with a bit of Shaun Ryder's attitude. 'Thrills n Pills n Bellyaches' did for the Mondays what 'Parklife' did for Blur. It was a defining moment with 'baggy' trippily fading out the 80s indie. This vibe and attitude influenced such as Oasis and in turn led to 'Britpop'.
